Assemblywoman Luz Rivas Announces Candidacy For California’s 29th Congressional District
Assemblywoman Luz Rivas (D-43) today announced her candidacy for California’s 29th Congressional District, located in the Northern San Fernando Valley
“Congress has descended into a constant state of dysfunction, and the American people are paying the price,” said Rivas. “Too many congressmembers seem more interested in throwing elbows or collecting clicks on social media than making a difference for working families.”
“Residents of the San Fernando Valley deserve a Member of Congress who will focus on their needs,” she added. “I will fight to make sure every family has economic opportunity, protect Social Security and Medicare, and reduce the threat of climate change.”
Elected to the State Assembly in 2018, Rivas served as Chair of the Assembly Committee on Natural Resources and currently serves on the Assembly Committees on Budget; Revenue and Taxation; and Communications and Conveyance. She has written and passed legislation to help protect workers from extreme heat, provide services for homeless youth, and prevent plastic pollution. And, she brought $10 million to create a Regional STEM Institute at Los Angeles Mission College.
Prior to her service in the Assembly, Rivas founded DIY (Do it Yourself) Girls, a non-profit organization dedicated to helping girls in the San Fernando Valley become interested in math and science. The organization has helped set thousands of young women on the path towards economic empowerment, independence, and self-confidence.
Rivas was immediately endorsed by Congressman Tony Cardenas, the current incumbent who has announced his intention to retire at the end of his current term in January,2025.
“Luz is a genuine public servant who has dedicated herself to delivering opportunities for the Valley,” said Tony Cardenas. “She gets things done, and has always put working families first.”
“Tony Cardenas has been a tireless voice for working families, children, and immigrants, said Rivas. “He is a true visionary who championed green energy, justice reform, and animal rights long before these issuesbecame popular.”
The 29th Congressional District includes the City of San Fernando and the City of Los Angeles neighborhoods of Arleta, Lake Balboa, Lake View Terrace, Mission Hills, North Hills, North Hollywood, Pacoima, Panorama City, Reseda, Sun Valley, Sylmar, Toluca Lake, Valley Glen, Valley Village and Van Nuys.
